A violent prisoner with a substantial crime record is sent from England to a hospital for orphans in Romania as part of a re-socialization program. His job is to repair the establishment's roof.
Brute (Til Schweiger), whose name befits his character, discovers the terrible conditions in which these children live. He also discovers the child-selling and contraband rackets that the hospital director is running on the side. Gradually, Brute's sensibilities to the suffering of others surface, moved by the love a 12 year old, fatally-ill gypsy girl feels for him.
Brute (France/Poland/Germany - 1997) is based on a true story and the screenplay was awarded the Hartley-Merrill Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
