festival CITY

Diego Galán, general advisor to the San Sebastián International Film Festival

San Sebastián is a small city, but difficult to know in all its facets in a short space of time. Facing the sea, hemmed by four mountains, split by a river, sheltering three beaches, with many different parts, all of which form a harmonious whole of stunning beauty. Frequented in the past by kings and aristocrats, Donostia - San Sebastián in Basque - is inhabited by a rumbustious, varied townspeople. Its sights and crannies will constantly surprise.
The beauty of San Sebastián's architecture is matched by that of its people. A visitor can choose his own favourite part of the city, if he's had time to enjoy all its corners. During the international film festival, which lasts 10 days, it's easy to find festival guests in the old town. There, an in the main young clientele flood its multitude of bars, dining societies, taverns and restaurants. The young meet and mingle taking chiquitos (small glasses of wine), zuritos (ditto, but with beer) and, especially, tapas.
Of the latter, there are specialities for any taste: the anchoas con centollo (anchovies with crab) at Txepetxa, the ensaladilla rusa (Russian salad) of Ormazabal, the anchoas rebozadas (anchovies in batter) of La Viña. A pleasure for the gourmet which complements the large - and merited - fame of the city's great restaurants: Arzak, Beti Jai, Urepel, Akelarre, Panier Fleuri. A visit to Donostia-San Sebastián is a must. Especially during September when these sallies to the old town form a rest from the cinema marathon of the film festival, currently one of the most important in Europe.
