Over the years, some of the most affecting French movies have had to do with the relationship between an adult and a child - a subject which French directors manage to treat without the sentimental cuteness of their Hollywood counterparts.
Sale gosse (Bad Boy) - shot last autumn in and around Lyon under the title of Nina - is about the relationship between 10-year-old Martin (Axel Lingee) and his mother, Nina (Anouk Grinberg). More like friends than mother and son, both are to a certain extent sustained by the romantic story Nina has made up about the boy's absent father, according to which he is a warrior prince in the desert. It is a story which Martin, who dreams of one day finding his father, is desperate to believe.
As a result, Martin finds it difficult to accept Nina's string of lovers and is in more or less constant trouble at school. Things finally come to a head on a school camping trip, when he decides to get his own back on another boy who has been tormenting him.
Former photographer Mouriéras has been making films since 1979 but first made his mark on the international scene with Montalvo et l'enfant (Montalvo and the Child), which also dealt with a boy trying to come to terms with the world of adults and which was shown in the Critics' Week at Cannes in 1989.
Durante muchos años, algunas de las películas francesas más efectivas han tenido que ver con las relaciones entre un adulto y un niño —un tema que los directores franceses consiguen tratar sin la monería sentimental de sus colegas de Hollywood.
Sale Gosse (Chico malo) —rodada el pasado verano cerca de Lyon bajo el título de Nina— trata de la relación entre un niño de 10 años, Martin, (Axel Lingee) y su madre, Nina (Anouk Grinberg). Con una relación de amigos más que de madre e hijo, los dos se mantienen unidos, hasta cierto punto, por la romántica historia que Nina se ha inventado sobre el padre ausente del niño, según la cual el padre es un príncipe guerrero del desierto. Es una historia que Martin, el cual sueña con encontrar algún día a su padre, se cree deseperadamente.

Las cosas llegan finalmente a su tope en un campamento organizado por el colegio, cuando Martin decide vengarse de un niño que le ha estado atormentando.
Mouriéras, un antiguo fotógrafo, ha hecho películas desde 1979, pero dejó por primera vez su huella en la escena internacional con Montalvo et l'enfant (Montalvo y el niño), que también trataba de un niño que intentaba reconciliarse con el mundo de los adultos. La película fue mostrada en la Semana de la Crítica del Festival de Cannes en 1989.
