Josiane Balasko hit the jackpot with this quirky, comic love triangle, which she wrote, directed, and in which she plays next to Spanish diva Victoria Abril (High Heels), and Alain Chabat (City of Fear).
Not only has the film enjoyed a favourable critical reception, it also burned up French box office.
Chabat plays Laurent, a stereotypical Mediterranean husband and father, who believes cheating is strictly a male prerogative. His affairs with every woman in sight are known by all but his Spanish wife, Loli (Abril). In fact, Laurent is out on a quickie when Marijo (Balasko), the van-driving, cigarillo-smoking lesbian and Loli fall in love. Hurt in his macho pride, he goes ape when he discovers his wife's infatuation, and from this moment he sees Marijo as the nemesis he has to defeat in order to regain the affection of the woman they both love.
The story is a classic love triangle. It doesn't pretend to depict homosexuality in a new or serious light nor is it a lampoon of gays. It strikes just the right balance between the politically correct and incorrect, and as a result, reaps tremendous popular success. Critics who had demolished Balasko's previous outing as a director, Ma vie est un enfer (1992), arguing she is incapable of acting and directing at the same time, will have to eat their words. This time, probably because homosexuality is such sensitive material, she managed to restrain her natural penchant for burlesque silliness and it definitely works in her favour. Still, at times, the film tends to be a bit too melodramatic, at other times it is far too close to caricature. Overall, however, Balasko successfully mixes comedy and drama without sacrificing the pace.
Some nudity and love-making action are to be expected in the scenes between Balasko and Abril, but this is no peep show, whatever the subject might suggest. Balasko's performance as Marijo, a committed lesbian who has never been to bed with a man before, is convincing, funny and sometimes tender. While Abril (Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar's fetish actress), puts in an impeccable performance as the typical housewife and mother of two who discovers that she's not so typical after all.

película no sólo ha recibido una crítica favorable, sino que además está arrasando en las taquillas francesas y está a punto de viajar a lugares remotos, ya sea en su versión francesa o como un remake de Hollywood.
Chabat interpreta a Laurent, un estereotípico marido y padre mediterráneo que cree que engañar es una prerrogatiiva estrictamente masculina. Sus aventuras con cada mujer que se pone en su camino son conocidas por todo el mundo, excepto por su mujer española, Loli (Abril). De hecho, Laurent está por ahí con un ligue cuando una lesbiana que conduce una furgoneta, que fuma empedernidamente y que se llama Marijo (Balasko), conoce a Loli y ambas tiene un flechazo. Herido en su orgullo de macho, Laurent se mesa los cabellos cuando descubre la fascinación que su mujer siente por Marijo. A partir de ese momento, Marijo se convierte en el enemigo que Laurent tiene que derrotar para recuperar el afecto de la mujer que los dos aman.
La historia es el clásico triángulo amoroso. No pretende retratar la homosexualidad de una forma nueva o seria. Y tampoco un ninguna defensa a ultranza de los gays. Consigue el equilibrio justo entre lo políticamente correcto y lo políticamente incorrecto y a esto, sin duda, debe el enorme éxito que ha tenido hasta ahora. Los críticos que han demolido el trabajo previo de dirección de Balasko, Ma vie est un enfer (1992), con el argumento de que ésta es incapaz de actuar y dirigir al mismo tiempo, tendrán que comerse sus palabras.
Quizá sea porque la homosexualidad es un tema delicado por lo que, esta vez, la directora consigue controlar su tendencia natural por lo burlesco; y esto funciona a su favor. Aun así, la película resulta a veces demasiado melodramática y otras demasiado cercana a la caricatura. Por regla general, sin embargo, Balasko consigue una mezcla adecuada entre comedia y drama sin por ello sacrificar el ritmo.
Aparecen los esperados desnudos e intercambios sexuales en las escenas entre Balasko y Abril, pero nunca se trata de un espectáculo picante, aunque el tema pueda sugerirlo. La interpretación que Balasko hace en el papel de Marijo, una lesbiana comprometida que nunca se ha acostado con un hombre, es graciosa y convincente, y a veces hasta tierna. Victoria Abril, por su parte, en el papel de la esposa y ama de casa típica que termina por descubrir que no es tan típica, está impecable.
