Das stille Haus (The House of Silence)

I love cliches,' says 35-year-old Swiss actor/director Christof Vorster, 'but I also love to turn them upside down.' The cliche that Vorster inverts in his second feature, Das stille Haus (The House of Silence), is the Switzerland of the tourist brochures, with its snowcapped mountains, its beautiful lakes with chalet-like hotels nestling on their banks.

Just such a hotel - the Hotel Seehof du Lac, discovered by Vorster on a holiday by Lake Lucerne last winter - provides the setting for the film. 'I wanted,' he says, 'to use the setting for this very internal story about these four little actors among the mountains.'

Jacqueline (Gudrun Gabriel), her husband, Hans (Hans Schenker) and her sister, Helen (Barbara Rudnik), all have ways of getting through the dreary off-season at the hotel. But the precarious - and repressive - harmony they have established is shattered by the arrival of Mark (Bernhard Bettermann), a drifter with whom Jacqueline has a car accident.

Jacqueline resists the temptation to have an affair with Mark for fear of disturbing the harmony - until she discovers that Hans and Helen have been having one for years.

'What I wanted,' says Vorster, 'was to tell the story of a person who goes from one accident to the next - whose life is a series of accidents - and then to introduce a real conflict into that life.'

Me encantan los clichés', confiesa el actor-director suizo de 35 años, Christof Vorster, 'pero también me encanta darles la vuelta'. El cliché al que Vorster se enfrenta en su segundo largometraje. Das stille Haus (La casa del silencio), es como un folleto turístico sobre Suiza: montañas de cumbres nevadas, hermosos lagos con coquetos hoteles tipo chalet descansando en sus orillas, etc.

Precisamente uno de estos hoteles (el Hotel Seehof du Lac, descubierto por Vorster un fin de semana en unas vacaciones en el Lago Lucerna este pasado invierno) proporciona el lugar para la película. 'Querría', dice Vorster, 'ayudarme del lugar para contar esta historia tan íntima sobre estos cuatro actores entre las montañas'.

Jackeline (Gudrun Gabriel), su marido, Hans (Hans Schenker) y su hermana, Helen (Barbara Rudnik), todos, encuentran la manera de sobrevivir el aburrimiento de un hotel en temporada baja. Pero la precaria -y reprimida- armonía que han establecido es interrumpida por la llegada de Mark (Bernhard Bettermann), un joven vagabundo con el que Jackeline tiene un accidente de coche.

Jackeline resiste la tentación de

tener un idilio con Mark por miedo a dinamitar la armonía -hasta que descubre que Hans y Helen hace años que mantienen su propio romance.

'Lo que quería', explica Vorster, 'era contar la historia de una persona que va de un accidente a otro -cuya vida es una serie de accidentes- y entonces introducir un conflicto real en su vida'.
