San Sebastián The Mar del Plata International Film Festival, which ceased to exist more than 25 years ago due to financial and political reasons, will officially be re-launched this year. The 12th edition of the event takes place in the Atlantic Ocean seaside resort, 400 kilometres from Buenos Aires.
In San Sebastián to announce the good news is festival director, and driving force behind the revival of the event, Julio Maharbiz. From the moment he was elected president of the Film Institute in Argentina, Maharbiz decided to revive the festival that until the mid-60s played a key role in the Latin American film industry. 'Somebody had to,' said Maharbiz, 'Nobody else seemed to have the courage to take the initiative. I do believe that there is an important role to play for the Mar del Plata International Film Festival in terms of promoting Argentinian cinema. We are re-launching this festival to gather the most talented film people from all over the world in order to get to know each other better and to learn from each other.'
Besides the official programme, with a competition that has FIAPF approval, this year's edition will have a variety of sidebars, including tributes, a presentation of work by female helmers, and focus on national cinemas. Christian De Schutter
