The Fan
US
Tony Scott

I've always wanted to do a film about obsession,' says director Tony Scott. 'For me, that is the heart and soul of The Fan.' What interests him, he says, is why stalkers stalk. 'It's about the haves and the have-nots, the little people who want to be big people,' he claims. 'I think the media encourages this sort of character to come to the surface, because the media thrives on people and situations like this.'

Robert De Niro plays a baseball fan called Gil Renard, an ordinary guy from suburban San Francisco who has been a Giants fan 'since I was in my mother's womb'. But, when things don't turn out the way he expects, his fascination with ballplayer Bobby Rayburn (Wesley Snipes) goes from admiration to obsession.

'Bob is very conscious of not repeating himself,' says Scott. 'We went out and we interviewed real knife salesmen. We did five days of just interviewing them and talking about their lives, their kids, the ties they wear, the cars they drive... And then we looked at all these tapes of Michael David Chapman [John Lennon's killer] and Bardo, the guy that killed Rebecca Schaeffer. I could see Bob formulating this character, which is very different from any that he's ever put on screen before.'
