For his debut feature, commercials-maker Gilles Mimouni who has also made four shorts since graduating from the French film school, IDHEC teams up with veteran producer Georges Benayoun of IMA Films for an offbeat relationship drama, L'appartement (The Apartment), which is part thriller, part fairytale, part romantic comedy.
Other partners in this Franco-Italian co-production shot in Paris and Madrid between February and April of last year are the Cecchi Goris, French broadcaster Canal+ and French major UGC, which is looking after world sales.
Mimouni cites an old Chinese proverb 'The darkest place is right beneath the lamp' as the key to his film, which involves Max (played by Vincent Cassel, who was Vinz in Matthieu Kassovitz's hugely successful La haine), who sets off on a bizarre exploration of his past and the women in it just as he is about to get married.
In addition to Cassel, currently one of France's hottest young actors, Mimouni has scored quite a coup for a first film by also snaring Romane Bohringer, daughter of Richard, who will be familiar to non-French-language audiences for her role in Agnieszka Holland's Total Eclipse, and Jean-Philippe Ecoffey, the inspector in Bertrand Blier's Mon homme.
