The Disappearance of Finbar
UK/IRELAND/SWEDEN
SUE CLAYTON

Sue Clayton's debut feature is a film about the fringes of Europe - about how far-flung places like Ireland and Lapland (the film's two chief locations) have more in common than, say, Ireland and England, or Lapland and Southern Sweden.

'I like to think that our film built a bridge between Galway and Norbotten,' says Clayton, referring to the fact that the Regional Development Agency in the latter - Sweden's most northerly province, most of which lies inside the Arctic Circle - put money into the film. In return, the production company trained and provided jobs for 30 unemployed local people.

A co-production between the UK, Ireland and Sweden, part-financed by Channel 4 and Paris-based Pandora, Finbar became a reality when Channel 4's head of drama, David Aukin, told Clayton she could make any film she liked, so long as it was personal.

Says Clayton, a BAFTA nominee for her TV film, Heart Songs: 'I come from the North East of England, but I didn't want to make a film there. I was attracted to the novel's themes about leaving home, and I'm obsessed with the wide-open spaces you find at the edge of the world.'
