She's the One

EDWARD BURNS

At last year's Sundance, the real discovery was Edward Burns' semi-autobiographical The Brothers McMullen, an ultra-low-budget film shot at weekends over eight months, which was promptly picked up by Fox Searchlight.

In She's the One, the setting remains the same working-class Irish-American New York with Burns himself, Mike McGlone and Maxine Bahns all making comeback appearances from The Brothers McMullen. And the story is still one of characters coping with life's setbacks with a mix of bungling incompetence and good-natured determination.

But the new film proves that Burns can tell stories other than his own. And it shows he can work with stars. She's the One features Jennifer Aniston of Friends alongside Cameron Diaz, recently voted the most promising newcomer by US distributors at ShoWest.

'You show me another film that came out last year that had five good parts for women between the ages of 22 and 27,' says Burns. 'You know, a lot of shit comes their way, and they're asked to play the bimbo or the best friend or the wife, and they're just there so the guy has a wife. I think that's why, with this script, I was able to get the actresses I got.'
