El dedo en la llaga
ARGENTINA
ALBERTO LECCHI

Don Quijote and Sancho Panza are back, so to speak. But this time they're not fighting windmills in La Mancha. They're in Argentina, 'doing the Americas' or trying to, at least.

Eduardo Peña (Karra Elejalde) and Angel Ruiz (Juanjo Puigcorbe) are two frustrated Spanish actors in search of a memorable act and some recognition. Seemingly opposite poles who mock each other in times of strife but who also defend each other when one of the two falters or is attacked. Two men who must choose between sticking to their dreams or casting them aside in exhange for money and an easier life.

One day, as Peña and Ruiz tour Argentina, they end up in the small country village of Zapallares, where they run into trouble with the law. There, they also meet Tolosa (Dario Grandinetti), an old friend who is now teaching high school. Together they decide to stage a play with the adolescents of the town. And although the authorities are dead set against it, nothing can stop the ingenuity and heart-felt need of these three men and the students.

Argentinian writer/director Alberto Lecchi's second feature film, El dedo en la llaga (Salt in the Wound), is the touching story of a 'pathetic' situation told in comic terms. Lecchi explains: 'It deals with two generations - those who are in their forties and those who are 18 - and their coming together through a small act of courage: the staging of a play in a town that hasn't seen theatre for ten years. While the former generation believes that their dreams are dead, the latter sees no hope on the horizon. The film is a wake-up call to both. To the former, it says: your dreams are asleep, not dead. To the latter, one small thing - done with care - can bring about change.'

The idea for the film came from a true story about 'a small town teacher who wrote letters to the government asking it for pencils, papers, books and such and who always got the same reply: a letter of congratulations and an Argentinian flag. Throughout the years, he received 25 flags in total, which he used to make curtains and other things for the town.' Kris Rendon
