Sol de otoño (Autumn Sun)
ARGENTINA
EDUARDO MIGNOGNA

Of all the countries of Latin America, Argentina is the most 'European', not so much because of climatic or even cultural similarities, but because the national and ethnic origins of the millions who settled there, mainly in the last century, has resulted in a mix more like that found in New York than in Rio de Janeiro, Caracas or Bogota.

That ethnic diversity is the driving concept behind Eduardo Mignogna Sol de otoño (Autumn Sun), which deals with a late-in-life relationship that comes about as a result of a lonely-hearts ad.

'Every time I see one of those,' says Mignogna, 'I always look for some detail, some secret clue that will reveal something about the identity of the person who placed it.' Here, the identity and the relationship which results from the ad turn out to be deeply rooted in the history of Argentina.

Autumn Sun which opened to rave reviews in Argentina early last month (8 August) started life as a short story written by Mignogna himself whose initial theme was a love affair between two older people. This was gradually developed into its present form with the help of an Argentinian producer based in that other great melting pot, New York. The final shooting script written by Mignogna and fellow filmmaker Santiago Oves.

The woman who places the ad (Norma Aleandro, star of Oscar-winner Historia oficial/The Official Version) is of Jewish origin, while the man who replies (Federico Luppi, one of Argentina's most popular older stars) is of Italian extraction. He is introduced to her culture and religion, while she must adjust to his very different approach to life. 'The aim of the film,' says Mignogna, 'is to break down prejudice between human beings through a story laced with both poetry and humour.

'Otherwise,' he says, 'it is one of those boy-falls-in-love-with-girl stories that I know that, at heart, we all want to to tell, whether we come from Argentina or not.'
