At the turn of the decade, Alfredo Knuchel quit his position as head of the Swiss Film Centre which he had built up into an impressive international promotional organisation to go back to filmmaking.
Two years in the making, Besser und besser (Better and Better) a deeply ironical title is the first fruit of this life-change to be seen on the international festival circuit. A fly-on-the-wall study of the 'B' family, it knocks the wind out of the belief that everyone fortunate to live in the land of William Tell is prosperous and content.
Armin B is now 61. His life has been a series of disappointments, yet he still clings to the 'never had it so good' optimism of the 50s. He now relies on a tiny photocopying business in the basement to make ends meet. His son is struggling to get off drugs and his wife has turned to religion. Nothing is getting better.
The 'B' family, says Knuchel, 'are a perfect example of the deep-seated insecurities that exist beneath the surface and because what has happened to them affects all of us.'
