Two years ago, the day top British director Ridley Scott's about-to-shoot film, Crisis in the Hot Zone,was abruptly cancelled by the studio, a development executive at Scott Free Productions slipped a copy of Todd Robinson's screenplay to the director. An hour-and-a-half later, the door of Scott's office was thrown open and he emerged, brandishing the screenplay and declaring: 'This is my next film!'
The story of a coming-of-age voyage taken by a group of teenagers in the fifties, White Squall is based on the experiences of Chuck Gieg, who took just such a trip himself. What should have been the adventure of a lifetime turned into tragedy when a sudden storm a 'white squall' wrecked the brigantine, leaving the surviving teenagers to cope with the death of their friends and the Skipper played in the film by Jeff Bridges to face the task of restoring his honour.
It is, adds Robinson, also about the end of era. 'It's the epiphany of a generation. It was the transition from Eisenhower to Kennedy, the beginning of Camelot, the end of the lie that was the fifties,' he says. 'The innocence that you see in those boys does not exist in kids today.'
