SCOTT SILVER

Hailed, when it played at Sundance in January, as a Midnight Cowboy for the nineties, Scott Silver's johns is a lot less evasive in its depiction of the world of male prostitutes than John Schlesinger's 1969 film but retains much of the lyrical tone of that earlier, Oscar-winning favourite.

The 'johns' of the title are Donner (Lukas Haas) and John (David Arquette), who hustle tricks on Los Angeles' Santa Monica Boulevard. It's the day before Christmas (which is also John's birthday), and his stash of cash has been stolen. He also owes money to a drug dealer. Beautifully shot by Tom Richmond, Silver's film follows them through the day, as the light-hearted tone of the beginning gives way to a darker, more tragic mood.

Featuring a cameo performance by Elliott Gould as a former client of John's and including Dolly Hall, producer of The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love among its list of executive producers, johns hangs very much on the performances of David Arquette (brother of Rosanna and Patricia) and Lukas Haas, whose first screen role was as the boy in Peter Weir's Witness.
