Snakes & Ladders
IRELAND/GERMANY
TRISH McADAM

I wanted to make something that was very different from the films that were being made in Ireland,' insists writer/director Trish McAdam of her debut feature, Snakes & Ladders. 'To start with, it's a comedy about women in the future, which is exactly the opposite to what you usually get, which are films about sad men in the past.'

Snakes & Ladders is a contemporary tale - part love story, part comedy - that could be set in any European city where bands play their own brand of rock music, young people drink in pubs, women fall in love with men and sometimes with other women, mothers struggle to come to terms with getting old but still feeling young, and unexpected pregnancies occur. Except it's not: it's set in Dublin

'It's also a film about modern female friendships,' says McAdam, 'about the myth that we're all sisters and we're all madly in love with each other. It's like we're supposed to be able to have it all - the friendships and the lovers and the career.

'And a lot of the friendships I've had in my own life,' she adds, 'have had very dramatic ends.'
