Earlier this summer, British TV news carried a small item about Her Majesty the Queen visiting a factory in Bristol. Two things made the item interesting: one, the 'factory' was a film studio; two, her Majesty was entirely familiar with the characters created there and was, indeed, a fan of the two most famous ones: Wallace, the inventor, and Gromit, his faithful but hapless dog. Indeed, further research revealed that, among the predictable round of official engagements, this was a visit that Her Majesty had actually requested herself.
Any self-respecting British person would have done the same. Since Aardman's claymation figures - a unique but painstakingly slow animation technique - first appeared in a series of commercials for heating by electricity, they have developed from a cult to a national obsession, culminating with two half-hour Wallace and Gromit films, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave, both broadcast to top ratings at Christmas. What is more, both went on to win Oscars, elevating their creator, Nick Park, to the elite ranks of double-Oscar winners.
This second selection of Aardman's output - sold internationally as a package by enterprising Paris-based company Celluloid Dreams - includes a range of examples of Aardman's work, including the 'Heat Electric' commercials and the unforgettable A Close Shave.
