We wrote Bound because we wanted to direct," explain first-time directors Larry and Andy Wachowski, brothers from the windy city, Chicago. Their first script, Assassins, was optioned by the legendary Dino de Laurentiis and subsequently bought by Warner Bros. The brothers also penned Plastic Man for Amblin Entertainment and have a deal to direct their fourth screenplay, a science fiction thriller, Matrix, for Warner Bros.
The Wachowskis chose to cut their directorial teeth for Dino de Laurentiis' production company under the watchful eye of producers Andrew Lazar and Stuart Boros. "Even though the Wachowskis are young, they're very savvy about movies and what they want," says Lazar. "They were so specific in how they wanted to make Bound that we never doubted their talent as directors. We trusted their vision of the film."
"We wanted to make an independent feature," the brothers explain, "something that could push the boundaries of a genre film and still remain entertaining. We like film noir, the mixture of suspense and humour, the kind of sexiness and stylishness it allows for, as well as it being a genre for strong female characters. We like strong women."
Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon play the Wachowski brothers' strong women. Tilly is Violet, the women that Cesar (Joe Pantoliano), who launders money for the mob, has been keeping for the past five years. Gershon is Corky, an ex-con straight from prison.
Cesar is babysitting a couple of million dollars and the last thing he expects to come between him and the money are a couple of women with brains to die for and bodies to match. Corky and Violet are about to learn what it is like to trust someone with your life, while Cesar has a few lessons of his own to learn. Christopher Pickard
