Autumn in Prague. Anna, a teenage girl, has deserted from the military academy and sought refuge with a group of Prague youngsters.

Influenced by her new Adidas friends, Anna turns into the ideal MTV girl, complete with 70s outfit and a freshly bleached new hair style.

In a ramshackle flat with Kitsch furnishings and fittings, Anna joins Speedy, Filip, Kytka and Irma. Four young people each coming to terms with their lives in their own way.

Or aren't they? Speedy grins from ear to ear, has an elephant tattooed on his arm, is stoned all doaty and does justice to his name. His artistic brother Filip prefers to paint Martians. Anna has a soft spot for Filip and Filip also feels attracted to the other-worldly Anna. She hasn't quite mastered the codes of big-city life yet, and this lead s to come comic moments. Filip however is involved with Kytka, a quiet kid who sets off at night to pander to older men. Irma doesn't really count because she wallows in an autumn depression. The group is completed by a bloodhound that is also popped the occasionally pill. From his POV we get a home-movie view of events in black and white.

Director David Ondricek (28), made several music videos for Czech bands after studying at the Prague film academy.

This background is clearly seen in his debut film Septej (Whisper). Through the lives of five young friends, Ondricek reveals a cross-section of Prague young culture. This does not differ very much from that in Amsterdam. Think of Ian Kerkhof's Wasted!. Housing it up on a pill or going to a party with a vague bunch where a religious psychopath cuts his artery for lack of attention. But also strolling in the park and imagining that a falling star is a UFO that will carry you off.

Filip and Anna may well face such a journey through space. Whether the others will remains to be seen. BvdG
