C'est Quoi la Vie?

C'est quoi la vie?
Synopsis

Nicolas is a young farmer who lives with his parents and grand parents. His life revolves around the cows to tend to, evenings in the local club, and the sun that rises every morning.

Yet, he is undecided about whether to stay on at the farm, with his father up to his neck in debts. He's searching for his place.

He meets Maria. She's pretty and older than he is. She lives in the region with her two children and her charm has gotten under his skin.

Back home, the difficulties are multiplying and they're going to have to give up the farm.

He's looking for a way out, but just seems to run up against brick walls. He remembers something his father once said, " country folk never die of hunger as long as they have a plot of land and seeds to sow... "

François Dupeyron, Director
From 1978 to 1988, Dupeyron made 9 short films, including La Dragonne (Grand Prix de Festival de Clermont-Ferrand) and Lamento (Grand Prix/ Clermont-Ferrand and César 1989). He also wrote the screenplay Le fils Préféré by Nicole Garcia, and for Un pont entre deux rives by Gérard Depardieu. Other films: Drôle d'endroit pour une Rencontre (1988) with Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu, Un coeur qui bat with Dominique Fayasse and Thierry Fortineau, and La machine d'après R. Belleto with Nathalie Baye and Gérard Depardieu.

C'est quoi la vie ?
"That's a question that everyone asks themselves at one time or another, and Nicolas asks himself the question. He is young end entering
adulthood, and he is searching. Life, we know what it is, it's everything around us, but there is another embedded question. ' What's the meaning of life? ' He doesn't know where to turn or what's happening to him. He's a bit lost. "

" He learns that if we poison the animals or poison the land, we poison ourselves and we die. But it's all so muddled for him because he's so entrenched within, in what he has always seen and done. He also feels a desire to go elsewhere, to take a giant step towards leaving it behind. He's not sure what he wants: Spend the rest of his life there, on the same stretch of land as the seasons go by year after year... "

C'est quoi la vie?

Eric Caravaca, Nicolas
" His indecision reflects other worries. Nicolas is representative of the young people my age. In the rural regions notably, young people linger aimlessly not knowing which direction to take. My cousins who live in the country are the same, always waiting for something to happen."

" In order to prepare for the role, I spent a while in Normandy. I learned how to milk cows, pull up beet roots, drive a tractor, etc. Not so as to imitate the farmer - I'm not supposed to be an expert farm hand in the film - but to delve into this universe. To get a better feeling of the rhythm of a day on the farm."

C'est quoi la vie?

Isabelle Renauld, Maria
" I don't have an answer to the question C'est quoi la vie?, but I think the film provides different signs. It is punctuated with notes of hope, in the same spirit as when rays of sunshine pass through the cracks in the door to the stable. And little by little, the film is drawn towards more light. Maria is just a ray of sunshine herself. She contributes to the happiness of Nicolas."
