Trey Edward Shults' KRISHA USA 2015 83min
Krisha (Krisha Fairchild, the director's real-life aunt) is a free-spirited woman who, after an extended period of absence, is reuniting with her close and extended family for a holiday dinner at her sister Robyn's (Robyn Fairchild) house in Texas. Robyn, her husband and her children are all eager to greet Krisha, but from the start a palpable unease permeates the air - an unease that only grows in force as Krisha gets to work cooking the turkey and trying to make up for lost time by catching up with her various relatives, chief among them her nephew Trey (director Trey Edward Shults). However, as Krisha's attempts at reconciliation become increasingly rebuffed, it doesn’t take long for tensions to mount and nerves to unravel in this dizzying portrait of a woman—and family—on the verge.
A personal debut feature, simmering with bravado camerawork (echoing Shults’ mentor Terence Malick), a propulsive score, and breakout performances from a largely nonprofessional cast, Krisha announces a remarkable new talent in homegrown independent cinema. Winner of the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at SXSW.
