Paris/Acapulco. Unifrance plans to support a Pan American Film Festival to be held in Acapulco in November 1997 and to pave the way will host a smaller event this year in Mexico City from 13-16 November. Ironically the dates clash with Florida's Sarasota French Film Festival (13-17 November) from which Unifrance recently pulled its sponsorship after seven years.
Unifrance is still committed to supporting North American festivals in New York, San Francisco, Miami, Toronto, Telluride, and
East Hampton while Sarasota hopes to count on the support of Unifrance for programming but expects to spotlight French language films from Canada and Belgium at this year's festival.
Across the border, Italian filmmakers can now count on the support of Martin Scorsese in the US after the announcement in New York that, in conjunction with the Italian cultural organisation, Cinecitta International, Scorsese will depending on available rights be launching the Martin Scorsese Library of Italian Cinema theatrically and on television and video. Scorsese himself will pick films to be reprinted, subtitled and restored where necessary.
