"Make your first feature with three really good friends," advised Eve Annenberg, the director of Dogs: The Rise and Fall of an All Girl Bookie Joint. The understanding of friends is clearly necessary in order to make a full-length feature for under US$100,000.
Annenberg and one such friend, producer Heather D'Adamo, were in Prague to attend last night's screening of their comedy, which they describe as "a crowd pleaser... a cross between Bringing Up Baby and House Party."
The film took two and a half years to make, but benefited from some generous donations along the way, such as free office space and recording time for the jazz-inspired soundtrack from New York's The Hit Factory.
With a German remix of the dialogue ("It made the film 10 times funnier - you can now hear what they're saying"), and with the 16mm print being blown up to 35mm, the film now has production values which belie its miniscule budget.
