Once upon a time

Oslo The Norwegian Film Institute has joined the financing of Jannik Hastrup's Den lange skygge (The Long Shadow), by contributing NOK2 million (US$211,000) to the DKK29.7 million (US$3.5 million) budget for the fully-animated feature about the life of Danish fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen.

The film, which goes into production this month, will be lensed as a Scandinavian co-production by Denmark's Zentropa Entertainments, with participation by Det Danske Tegnefilmkompagni (Denmark), Northern Lights (Norway) and Trust Film (Sweden). It has also been supported by the Danish Film Institute, the Nordic Film & TV Fund and Eurimages.

With Andersen's 1847 short story, Skyggen (The Shadow), as the through theme, Hastrup and Bent Haller's screenplay depicts the story of the author who at an early age realised that he was 'different', with a unruly shadow which behaves otherwise than he wants. The film will be readied for a late 1997-early 1998 premiere.

The Norwegian Film Institute also chipped in NOK750,000 (US$80,000) for the promotion and marketing of Vibeke Idsøe's Jakten på nyresteinen (The Hunt for the Kidney Stone), about an eight-year-old boy travelling through the body of his grandfather. With the domestic opening scheduled for 27 September, the film will be internationally handled by Spelling Films.
