Twister hits US$200m

Los Angeles By the smallest of margins - just US$18,830 - Twister became the first film this year, and the 19th (overall) to break the US$200 million barrier at the US box office. Twister leads the summer b.o. season, followed by Mission: Impossible (US$145 m) after four weeks; and The Rock (US$56.1 m, two weeks).

Toy Story has now grossed US$189 million (29 weeks) while The Birdcage, the year's other major hit, stands at US$121 million (15 weeks).

Buena Vista still holds on to its position at the top with a 20% market share from 26 releases this year.

Warner Bros is second with a 15.5% share from 14 releases, followed by Paramount (12.9% from 14), Universal (10.4% from 13), MGM/UA (9.3% from 14); Sony (9.2% from 21); and Fox (7.5% from 6).
