Press review

The high-circulation broadsheet Mlada fronta Dnes reports from yesterday's press conference with the jury, saying that none of the jury members considered the existence of two international festivals in the Czech Republic a major problem. "The more films we see the better," it quotes Czech director Vera Chytilova as saying. The paper says the jury wouldn't comment on the competition selection, which has only one non-European film and none from America.

The paper, like others, covers the decision by the Blaník cinema to withdraw from the festival. Instead it will continue screening the successful Czech film Kolya, it writes.

Lidove noviny writes that although the Prague International Film Festival is in the 'A' category, it does not have a long tradition like Cannes or Berlin. It carries on from last year's event, and only the future will show how it will establish itself in the film festival calendar.

All festival screenings scheduled to take place in the Blanik theatre on Sunday and Monday have been cancelled. Prague International Film Festival programme director John Riley said "The deal with the Blaník theatre was in place and a downpayment had been made for the first three days of festival use. It is extremely unfortunate and we are actively pursuing a new venue for the films which were to be shown there."
