Danes' six set to roll

Copenhagen A state subsidy of DKK19 (US$3.2) million distributed by the Danish Film Institute this month will set six features rolling, including three Scandinavian co-productions, with total budgets in excess of DKK58 million.

Susanne Bier (Family Matters) will shoot a psychological thriller, Dyr (Beast), for Zentropa Entertainments. With principal photography to commence 1 September, the film follows a young woman in her early 20s about to be married, and her encounter with a new religious sect.

Production costs are estimated at DKK10.5 million.

Zentropa received support as co-producer on Alexander Røsler's Mendel, a Norwegian NOK18.8 million depiction of a German-Jewish family and its efforts to start a new life in Norway after the Second World War. Northern Lights will start production on the Norwegian-Danish-German venture on Monday.

Starring Sofie Gråbøl, Mørkets ø (Island of Darkness) is the story of a teacher who takes a job on a remote Norwegian island where she gets involved with the local vicar. Norwegian director Trygve Disen will helm the film to lense from 1 April next year, on a NOK9 million budget as a Northern Lights and Balboa Enterprise production.

The Institute will support a 35mm blowup for theatrical release of Swedish director Frederik von Krusenstjerna's Transformer - Filmen om Lars von Trier, a SEK3.6 million Memfis and Zentropa's portrayal of the Danish filmmaker.

Two features were partially funded over the 50/50 scheme: Aage Rais' På fremmed mark (In a Strange Field) backed by Balboa Enterprise, and Steen Rasmussen's and Michael Wikkes' S rløse Ovedrev, from Gr dsted Film & Fjernsyn.
