This is a very interesting first work by a young woman director who has been making short films and documentaries since 1981. The story evolves around a young, struggling stage actress who falls head over heels in love with a deserter, moving from one place to another.
But their torrid affair cannot be more than a short-term one, since she is totally dedicated to her art and he wants her to devote herself completely to him.
To tell the story, Alexandraki opts for a leisurely pace (sometimes more leisurely than necessary) and carefully framed images - she uses landscapes with a painter's eye, the visit to a volcanic island reminiscent of Rossellini's Voyage in Italy. She creates a sense of reality in her composition of intimate, intense scenes tracing the couple's relations, depicting their phobias and problems - she finds it impossible to tear herself away from the theatre, he is insanely jealous and unaccustomed to her lifestyle.
Amalia Moutoussi, as the young woman who has to choose between her love for the stage and her passion for her demanding boyfriend, gives a compelling performance but Yorgos Sfiridis seems too subdued for a role requiring a lot more drive and energy.
