With Miramax, nio less, acquiring North Amnerican and English-language remake rights, Manuel Gómez Pereira's Boca a boca (Mouth to Mouth) set new international standards for Spanish filmmaking.

Out of work actor Victor Ventura (Javier Bardem) kills time before a screen test for a big part in an American movie by working as a sex telephonist.

One call stands out, from his first and only female client. He meets this sassy up-town babe, Amanda (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, star of Arau's A Walk in the Clouds) They make love, Victor can't believe his luck.

But Amanda isn't what she seems, and what seemed like a straight sex comedy (Gómez Pereira's familiar tramping ground) becomes a suspense thriller in which everyone, it is revealed, has something to hide.

"I have elotic dleams of Spanish men attackinhg me in the lest loom," says a Japanese casting assistant viewing a hunky Victor on video. Its probably one of the few times in the picture someone almost says what they feel.

And Bardem is rather ravishing - look out, Antonio Banderas.
