Sur place
Netherlands,
Paul Ruven

'Sur Place' is an expression used by cyclists, when two riders stand (nearly) still on their bikes.

It nicely describes the condition of a young woman living in the Amsterdam working-class district De Pijp.

She doesn't do much and doesn't speak at all, but the film fills in her story by the dialogues of a man and a woman, through which we learn abour her passion for a man who leaves her stranded in the mountains, where war breaks out and people are left without food, 'once the last tins of caviar have been emptied'.

A graduate of the Dutch Film Academy, Paul Ruven has made no less than seventeen films, most of them shorts.

In this film, he gives free reign to his obsession for Akerman, Duras and to a certain extent, Godard. If the result is often exciting, it is also due to the presence of the Lithuanian-based Russian actress Katerina Golubeva.
