A Month by the Lake takes place on Italy's Lake Como in the apparently halcyon days before the Second World War, a setting often frequented by the story's writer, HE Bates.
Vanessa Redgrave acts a familiar and beloved type in British cinema, the quirky spinster on continental holiday.
She is quite taken by an equally charming character, the single middle-aged gentleman known as the Major, played gamely by Edward Fox.
But the object of the Major's desire is one school-age American naughty played by Uma Thurman.
In the meantime, Redgrave is pursued herself by a young Italian ragazzo.
A Month by the Lake offers many of the sweet escapes of the travel and romance book combined. And if loneliness is at the heart of any desire to commune with another, it's all the more bittersweet in those who have lived over half their lives alone.
Redgrave and Fox remind us that love is not only the province of the young.
