Eggs, Norwegian writer/director Bent Hamer's first feature, is the story of two elderly brothers, Moe and Pa. The pair have always lived together in the same house, so when Konrad - Pa's adult son, dating from an earlier visit to Sweden - comes to live with them for a while, it jeopardises their peaceful universe.

"I am often asked about the title," says Hamer. "To me it has also a symbolic, almost religious meaning - it evokes a relationship between people, lives passing by." To tie in the metaphorical with the literal, Konrad turns up in a wheelchair, with a large box of birds' eggs as his only luggage.

"Over the years Moe and Pa have established their habits and rituals, yet they are lonely and vulnerable. Their house is a protective shell," says Hamer. "I created Konrad as a mysterious character whom they never feel sure about. "

As trainee actors during the Second World War, Sverre Hansen and Kjell Stormoen shared a small farm in western Norway, growing tobacco and cauliflowers. Today, at the age of 75 and 76 respectively, the two return to the isolated valleys as the brothers.
