I am sick and tired of the press mentioning my age all the time, instead of talking about my film," says Danish director Astrid Henning-Jensen. So this is just a short note to state the fact that she is 81 and remembers the silent era, but was never part of it.

At Berlin earlier this year she received the Berlinale Camera - to add to the Silver Bear she won in 1979 for Vinterbørn (Winterborn) - and also unspooled her 17th feature in the Panorama. Bella min Bella (Bella my Bella) is her screen comeback after 10 years, a personal look at women as they struggle to adapt to the human condition of contemporary life in its many forms.

"Based on my own, as well as on friends' experiences, mixed with imagination, the story is very realistic to me. It portrays a young high school girl, and it is not just done for the youngsters, but also for their parents - I hope," she says.

Bella is in her late teens, and lives with her mother, Maj, in a close relationship. As Maj starts to flirt with their male tenant, Bella involves herself in helping a young Bosnian refugee who is seeking asylum. Although she is distancing herself from Maj, she discovers that she suddenly needs her mother more than ever.
