I had two projects in mind: one where I would play a singer, the other the story of two sisters," explains co-producer and lead actress, Jennifer Jason Leigh. "The ideas fused after several months to become the story of two sisters who share a passion for music and song; the elder, Georgia, is gifted and well-balanced, the younger, Sadie, is ambitious, lost and talentless." Such was the genesis of Georgia, written by Leigh's mother, Barbara Turner.
Leigh and Turner then approached director Ulu Grosbard, who was immediately attracted to the project: "The characters were well written, and I was interested in the tension between the sisters."
The search for funding was complicated by the fact that, "it was a character-driven piece and the majors weren't interested." Eventually CiBy backed the project, which allowed Grosbard the freedom to record the music live, a decision that went against perceived industry wisdom. For Grosbard, "It was a gamble but it adds the magic of something happening between the actors and their own performance a spontaneity that is unique."
