Shooting started last month on what is to become the first-ever Canadian-Finnish co-production: Pekka Mandart's Going to Kansas City.
Produced by Pamela Mandart and Lise Abastado for Montreal-based Telescene and Finland's Mandart Entertainment, the fast-paced drama hinges on the secrets and scandals of a small town. Michael Ironside, Melissa Galianos and rising Finnish star Mikko Nousiainen are sharing the major roles.
Written by Morrie Ruvinsky, Going to Kansas City charts the odyssey of Mikko, a young musician who can't wait to leave his Helsinki home to spend a year as an exchange student in Kansas City, home of the blues. But instead, he ends up on a Kansas farm where the locals regard him with growing suspicion. When a trip to the city to hear some live music ends in tragedy, Mikko finds himself with plenty of reasons to really sing the blues.
With principal photography scheduled to wrap around the end of this month, shooting takes place on locations in Canada, Kansas and Finland.
An independent film and television company headquartered in Montreal, Telescene's recent productions include TV series like The Hunger and the Emmy-nominated Hiroshima. Also currently in production is Student Bodies, a sitcom for Fox which combines live-action and animation. Mandart Entertainment has been producing documentaries and TV drama since 1986.
International sales on Going to Kansas City are being handled by London-based Park Entertainment. Henry Womersley
