Díky za kazdé nové ráno (I Thank You for Each New Morning)
Milan Steindler
Czechoslovakia

I Thank You for Each New Morning is a mosaic of events which occurs over the 20 years following the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 - two decades which distorted society and relationships. The story of Olga, her family and friends is presented with terse humour and sarcastic irony. Olga grows up under the influence of her first loves and her relationship with her father, a Ukranian poet, into a world of «normalisation».
The screenplay for I Thank You won the Hartley-Merril award in 1992 in Los Angeles. This award is given to screenwriters and scripts emerging from economically developing countries.
The film is a first attempt by Czech filmmakers to come to terms with the former regime, a bitter comedy in which laughter gives way to tears. Nevertheless, the heroes of the film, even in these times of hardship, are able to adopt a positive attitude to life and the lives of others. They know how to laugh and to have fun.
Director Milan Steindler co-founded the now famous Sklep (Cellar) theatre company during the 1980s - the Sklepesque view of the world and the events within it have made their mark on the film. Jakub Dospiva
