The First Love
Roman Balayan, the prominent Armenian director now based in Moscow, showcases his fifth (from nine) feature based on Russian classic literature. The First Love is a screen version of the novel by Ivan Turgenev.
'I visualise my previous feature, Kiss, based-on-Chekhov as a prequel to The First Love,' explains Balayan. 'My former main character (Oleg Yankovsky) is now 20 years older. He has become an infantile father of our main character, a touching teenager (Andrei Ishchenko), who lives among indifferent people.'
The main message of this romantic drama is that love and beauty go together. 'The First Love is a film about people who do not love each other,' says director Balayan. 'The father does not love the wife. The young girl does not love the teenager. They are robbing each other.'
