Three Sisters
Sergei Soloviev
Russia

Based on Anton Chekhov's classic play, Three Sisters is the 14th feature directed by Sergei Soloviev, a key figure in Russia's filmmaking community (he is, among other things, currently President of the Moscow Festival and Chairman of the Russian Filmmakers Union).
According to Soloviev, he has aimed at a 'standard adaptation of Chekhov... without a trace of avantgardism'. Contrary to tradition he has selected many of the young actresses for his films from among the students from his Moscow Film Academy class.
'In fact, the three sisters are young ladies,' he insists. The only veteran actor starring is Otto Sander, who confessed at the festival that initially he found it hard to adapt to the Russian taciturn manner of performance.
