Gogo no yigonjo (The Last Note)
In The Last Note, 82-year-old Japanese director-scriptwriter-producer Kaneto Shindo (The Story About the Beloved Wife, The Naked Island) portrays an ageing and widowed stage actress who visits her 'villa' in the central Japanese mountain district, Tadeshima, where she plans to spend the summer.
She receives an unexpected visitor, Tomie, an erstwhile actress who she knew well in her youth when both worked together for a theatre company.
Tomie has grown senile, and her husband has brought her to the villa. The couple are too poor to go and live in a home for the elderly. After they observe their home town from the top of a nearby hill, they drown themselves in the sea. SIMON FIETSPAD
