Clear and Present Danger gets its title from the section of US law that prohibits the use of military force except in situations where «a clear and present danger to the national security of the United States» exists. In this case the danger comes from disaffected elements within the government waging an illegal war on Colombian drug dealers. Harrison Ford, reprising his role as CIA agent Jack Ryan, has to decide whether to betray his peers or not.
Philip Noyce, who grabbed Hollywood's attention with the nerve-wracking Dead Calm (1989), started his career as an underground filmmaker but now concentrates on technological thrillers like Sliver (1993) and Patriot Games (1992). Action scenes in Clear and Present Danger were so complex that Noyce simulated one sequence on computer to know where to place his cameras before filming began.
