Locarno
: A Treat for Movie-Goers
Locarno has several unique qualities that make it a gem
on the festival circuit. Located on the shores of the
Lake Maggiore, at the foot of the Swiss Alps, it has an
unmatched picturesque setting. The exciting night screenings
on the cobbled Piazza Grande at the heart of the city
make for one of the biggest makeshift open air cinemas,
where more than 10 000 cinephiles crowd not only the Piazza
but also the surrounding porticoes and restaurant balconies.

No quarto da Vanda
Pedro Costa (Portugal)

It
was during the filming of Ossos in Lisbon, Costa's last
film that was well received at Venice 97, that he met
Vanda Duarte and decided to make his next film about her.
Alone with his digital camera, Costa filmed images during
a year in Vanda's room before moving on to film the entire
neighborhood being razed to the ground.

King
of the B's
The
Locarno Film Festival inaugurated a new sidebar section,
the King of the Bs, where the goal is to present innovative
works that would qualify as B movies.
The section was inspired partly by the 1997 work "King
of Bs, Working Within the Hollywood Section" from
filmmaker Todd McCarthy, who is also a jury member this
year. Marco Muller asked him to choose three films that
were subversive in terms of filmmaking and thus the section
began.
