The 53rd Cannes International Film Festival
Virginie Ledoyen and Jury President Luc Besson presented the 53rd Palme d'Or Awards with the top prize going to Lars Von Trier for Dancer in the Dark with leading actress Bjork voted Best Actress.

Cannes 2001 is to take place 9 - 20 May.

Berlin

Denzel Washington took Best Actor for his role in The Hurricane and the Golden Bear went to Magnolia by the director Paul Thomas Anderson.

New Director of Berlin
52-year old Dieter Kosslick has been appointed Director of the Berlin International Film Festival. Moritz de Hadeln, who has run the Festival for the past 20 years, will preside over the 2001 edition from
7 - 18 February before handing it over to his successor.

Edinburgh: Mid Fest Report
13 - 27 August

The fest opened with aplomb on Sunday 13th with the UK premiere of Lars von Trier's Cannes winner Dancer in the Dark. Although Bjork failed to make an appearance as hoped, Robert Carlyle and Billy Connolly both turned up to the opening gala at Edinburgh's Odeon cinema.

Montreal World Film Fest
25 August - 4 September

This year's Montreal World Film Festival features 30 films from Latin America, including Couronnement from Chilean director Silvio Caiozzi, and The Adventures of God, from Argentine Eliseo Sibiela, both of which will screen in the Official Competition. In addition, several features will be screened in the Cinema of Tomorrow Section, including the Argentine films: El Astillero, and Felicidades; the Brazilian films A Traves da Janela; the Chilean film El Chacotero Sentimental; La Pelicula from Cristian Galaz, the Colombian film Diastole Y Sistole and many more.

Venice Film Festival News
30 Aug - 9 September
Organizers of the Venice Film Festival were outraged last week to learn that USA Films was withdrawing Series 7: The Contenders from the festival. The film, a dark comedy that parodies reality-based TV shows, was slated to have its world premiere in the Dreams and Visions midnight line-up before screening at the Toronto International Film Festival one week later. The studio has opted instead to try to screen the film at the Sundance festival in January, closer to its release date in February 2001.

Toronto Announces Full Line-Up
7 - 16 September
Toronto Festival director Piers Handling has announced the complete lineup for the Toronto Festival this week. From more than 1,800 submissions, this year's 25th anniversary event has been winnowed down to a selection of 329 films from 56 countries, which will screen in 15 different programs. World premieres include The Dish from Australian Rob Sitch, Sexy Beast from Jonathan Glazer, and Pandaemonium from Julien Temple. The Masters and Contemporary World Cinema selections will screen hotly-anticipated new works by Claude Chabrol, Edward Yang (Yi-Yi), Arturo Ripstein, Bela Tarr, Roy Guerra, Im Kwontaek, Barbara Kopple (Conversations with Gregory Peck), Ken Loach, Volker Schlöndorff, Chantal Akerman, Nagisa Oshima, Tran Anh Hung, Jafar Panahi, Fruit Chan, and many more.

Tube Film Fest Awards
This year's Tube Fest, celebrating films about adventure sports, came to a wrap 21 August at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. The award for Best Overall Film was awarded to Seth: The Hard Way, a look at motocross racing. The Adobe Best Highlight Film was awarded to September Session a surf documentary from watery wunderkind Jack Johnson. The audience favorite award went to Miracle Boy and Nyquist from director Steve Olpin.

Hip Hop Awards Cancelled Police in Pasadena were forced to halt the taping of the Source Hip Hop Music Awards this week when a fight erupted backstage in the hall of the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, witnesses said. Audiences were asked to leave the auditorium about an hour into the taping, just after L'il Kim performed, because of the fight. In a press release it was announced that Dr. Dre received five awards, and his protege, Eminem, won two.

Narrowsburg Film Festival
Michael Sergio's film Under Hellgate Bidge was the star at the Narrowburg Independent Film Festival in upstate New York, which took place from 2 - 6 August. The film not only won the prize for Best Film, but Sergio was named Best Director, the star Michael Rodick was named Best Actor, and Brian Vincent was named Rising Star. Rita Moreno was named Best Actress for her performance in Blue Moon, which also won the People's Choice award. Michael Swanhaus won the Young Filmmaker Award for his film Pigeonholed.

Academy Welcomes Foreign Films

Seventy-five countries have been invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to submit their top films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category for the 73rd Annual Academy Awards. Entry forms must be received at the Academy by Wednesday, November 1, 2000, and films must be received by Wednesday, November 15.

Nominations will be announced at the Academy on Tuesday, February 13, 2001.

NY Independent Film Festival
Steven Kane won the prize for Best Director in the feature film category for In the Doghouse. The film was also the winner at LA's DancesWithFilms Festival.
