Manhattan – Each year festival programmer Nick Mason attends dozens of screenings to select a small group of international films to screen in Union Square park in New York City. The Freak was chosen as the animated entry and filmmaker Meni Tsirbas and producer Dane Allan Smith flew top the big apple to attend this special event. The filmmakers attended from South America . Ireland and Australia and were treated to a whirlwind tour of NYC and the surrounding area by host Nick Mason. The weekend began at a rooftop dinner reception at the Gershwin Hotel and ended with the screening in Union Square Park Sunday evening. City officials and local celebrities including actor Eric Stoltz mingled among the fans at this free annual event. This was the east coast premier of the film and programmers for the Tribeca Film Festival got wind of The Freak's charm. The Tribeca Festival later programmed the snaggle toothed misfit to screen this May in Manhattan as part of the prestigious festival.
New Yorkers join the growing number of fans that succumb to this technologically advanced film with a compelling story. The film closes to a cheering crowd, many sporting freak clothing and pins and the response is overwhelmingly favorable.
