No Place to Go Lands in Miami

Miami International Film Festival

No Place to Go by Oskar Roehler beat out 23 others to win the Prize of the International Film Critics (FIPRESCI Prize). The jury praised the "dramatic intensity with which it depicts a woman in crisis both personal and historical." The short film award went to The Heart of the World by Guy Maddin (Canada, 2000) for "its loving and comic homage to the cinemas of Eisenstein and Pudovkin and silent cinema in general."

Panafrican Film and TV Festival of Ouagadougou
February 24 - March 3 (Burkina Faso)
Adanggaman, reportedly the first African film to address African involvement in the slave trade with the west, picked up the best picture award at the all-Africa film festival over the weekend. The Stallion of Yennenga award for best director was given to Moroccan Nabil Ayouch for Ali Zaoua.
Ouagoudou is the largest African film festival, held only once every two years in Burkina Faso, and is devoted to aiding distribution of African films as well as those from less-developed countries..

The Oporto Int'l Film Festival (Fantasporto)

The 21st edition of Fantasporto (also known as the Oporto International Film Festival), just closed with a massive attendance of public, distributors, professionals, and media coverage. The Best Film Award went to Amores Perros by Alejandro G. Inarritu of Mexico, while the Special Award of the Jury went to The Isle by Kim Ki-Duk of South Korea.

Heavy rain didn't dampen spirits Sunday night, as the Cinequest San Jose Film Festival came to a thunderous close. Pass and ticket holders braved the drizzle for over an hour before trickling into the sold-out screening of Alejandro Gonzαlez Iραrritu's ambitious Amores Perros, the Oscar nominee for best foreign-language film from Mexico.

You Can count on Me

Writers' Guild of America Awards
March 4 (Beverly Hills and New York)
Kenneth Lonergan won the top honor from the Writers Guild of America for his screenplay You Can Count on Me. Winners of the guild's 53rd Annual Awards were announced in ceremonies held in Beverly Hills by the WGA West and in NY by the WGA East. This is hardly the first accolade for Lonergan's scribing abilities: last year he won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance 2000 Film Festival.
