In first place position at the US box office with $11m in its first week of release, Johnny Depp stars in From Hell as Jack the Ripper, the mysterious, faceless killer who roamed the streets of the Whitechapel district in 1888 London and wrote defiant letters to the police (signed "From Hell").

Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's Gothic thriller, The Devil's Backbone, tells the story of children in a Spanish orphanage on the eve of WWII who must endure the presence of a ghost and an evil caretaker.

Vidocq

Sitges 2001 awarded five trophies to the French film sensation Vidocq, directed by FX wizard Pitof. The high-tech suspense period film stars superstar Gerard Depardieu and was entirely digitally produced.
