Cannes, the Star of Stars

The latest festival wrap-ups and awards.

StarWalkers

They all must make their grand entrances up the red carpet, pose for the cameramen jabbing each other for the best shot, wave to the fans screaming for autographs, give an occasional interview and enter the auditorium. Some will be seeing the final cut for the first time, others will be sizing up the audience reactions, all hoping to come out of this adventure with a Palme d'Or.

StarHosts with the Most
The perfect way to promote a film in Cannes, or grease a few hundred palms, or hobnob with VIPs, all the parties look to outdo the others. For the Moulin Rouge Party, Fox brought over the studio decor, same idea for the Lord of the Rings preview party which had a whole village brought in. Filmax covered a swimming pool which turned into a dance floor, which eventually caved in to become a swim party. The Avalon party took over the futuristic house of Pierre Cardin and leave it to Moving Pictures to host one of the best bashes each year at the Chateau de la Napoule.

Stars for Sale

International acquisitions executives weren't exactly dancing on the Croisette about this year's films, heading home empty-handed. For the first time an Indian Pavilion was set up in the market in response to the steeply rising sales graph of Indian blockbusters in foreign markets. And some of the market issues of interest: the gay globe, hands up for porn & the ratings war.

StarBusters

Those marginal types either trying to break through to the other side such as Australian filmmaker Jeremy Weinstein whose film Looking for Harvey stars Andie McDowell, Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke; and they don't know they're in it. Or others such as maverick filmmaker Tony Kaye who changed his tune and turned to rock 'n roll because his daughter told him rock stars are better, in Cannes promoting his new group K.
