Marseille 99

Festival of Documentary Film

13 - 22 June

"Marseilles belongs to those who come from the sea"
Blaise Cendrars

2600 years ago, Massilia was founded by Greeks from Phocaea, an ancient city in Asia Minor. In 1999, Marseilles, France's second largest city and its most important commercial port; one of the world's biggest passenger ports; home to many artists, including Edmond Rostand, Antonin Artaud, Paul Valéry… will host the 10th edition of the Festival of Documentary Film, organized by Vue sur les Docs.

Over the last several years, the documentary sector has grown more than any other in the audiovisual field worldwide. In France, successes such as Microcosmos by Claude Nuridsany and Marie Pérennoux, and Les 4 saisons d'Espigoule by Christian Philibert (Audience Award - Vue sur les Docs 1998), have marked the return of documentary films to the big screen.

The Official Selection…consisting of films with original or unusual views of the world. A selection of 20 films from five continents will present the state of affairs in documentary filmmaking. 2600 years in Marseilles…15 contemporary and archival films in pursuit of the memory of Marseilles will echo a particular Mediterranean history. Premiers…to encourage young filmmakers, fifteen first films are incorporated into the ensemble of the programme.

The Films

The very international selection for this 10th Festival brings together different documentary styles: direct cinema, home-movie, personal or historical inquiry… Whether they work in video or film, 16 or 35 mm, most of the filmmakers favor an auteur approach. Directors of international renown, Wim Wenders prove that they can pass lightly from fiction to documentary.
