Programme

This year, instead of focusing on one main genre for our retrospective we have tried to cater to the diversity of our audience with several mini seasons.

VILLAINS

Everyone loves the villain don't they? Our season focuses on some of the most memorable and some of the best portrayals of villainy committed to celluloid. Films include comic book adaptations, crime thrillers and real life dramas.

FILMS IN TUNE

Where the music and film industry have combined, in the form of musicians deciding they want to be actors, films about the lives of musicians and films where music is the most important thing in the world. A season that should be music to the ears (and eyes).

BLAXPLOITATION

In association with blaxploitation.com we are screening some of the genres classic high points and unfamiliar gems. To coincide with the screenings will be an exclusive pimp party featuring a night of Seventies funk and Blax soundtrack delights.

ALAN PARKER

Mainly looking at his work that could fit into our "Films in Tune" section and culminating in a celebration of his film The Commitments (celebrating it's 10 year anniversary this year) for our closing gala we are delving into the canon of one of Britain's most interesting directors.

DAVID LYNCH WEEKEND

The "weirdmeister" comes under the spotlight in our dedicated weekend. This was designed at the request of local people following the 2000 festival. We hope they like it.

LOVE. MURDER. SUBTITLES.

Our introduction to world cinema aims to redress the idea that foreign films are dull by focusing on some of the most romantic and thrilling films ever produced. Films that could teach modern Hollywood a thing or two.

INVITED FEATURES

We are inviting some American independent films that have played the likes of Atlanta and the IFP market in New York to make their UK screening debut. This is to increase the representation of American independent work in the UK external to London and Edinburgh and also because the films are great and should be seen.
