Lazennec's still water

'Instead of developing 20 scripts we develop 20 directors,' producer Bertrand Faivre of French production company Lazennec told Moving Pictures.

The policy seems to be working. Recently, Lazennec has helped the careers of everybody from Matthieu Kassovitz and Tran Anh Hung. Faivre is equally optimistic about prospects for latest discovery, Jacques Deschamps, whose three-part love story, Still Waters Run Deep, was screened in Venice's Window On Images section.

Deschamps, who'd 'proved himself' by making a short for Lazennec, had an 85-day shooting schedule, a US$2.5 million budget and eight months editing time not bad for a first feature.

Forthcoming Lazennec projects include Kill The Day, a co-production with Channel 4 and the BFI, which will be directed by young Scottish filmmaker, Lynne Ramsay. GM
