The Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica, internationally better known as the Venice Film Festival, is by far the oldest film festival that still takes place today.
The 1934 edition marked the first year that awards were chosen by a jury consisting of professionals. In 1952, the top prize became known as the Golden Lion of Saint Mark, after Venice's patron saint, while the acting awards are known as the Volpi Cups, while Osella d'Oro's go to directors, scriptwriters and cinematographers.
For the first time, Moving Pictures will be publishing ten dailies throughout this year's festival.
Last year's Golden Lion went to Tran-Anh Hung's Cyclo.
